Thunder Thornton Wants To Develop His 10-Acre Homesite At Riverview

  • Monday, May 7, 2018

Chattanooga businessman and developer John "Thunder" Thornton is proposing to subdivide his 10-acre Riverview estate.

He and his wife, Eileen, have a proposal before the Planning Commission for a Residential Planned Unit Development for the purpose of “subdividing two existing lots into six Estate lots.”

The scenic property at 12 Rivervista Dr. overlooking the Tennessee River now only contains the Thornton home and a tennis pavilion.

The Thorntons "propose adding five new units as single-family housing and guest houses in order to develop their property as a private, estate lot type community. The property owner would like to downsize and keep the property intact with large, estate lots."

The tennis pavilion on the west side would be converted to a residential lot.

The small guest houses would be allowed on lots 4, 5, and 6.

Officials said, "The owner plans to put covenants in place to protect the natural features and views from this property that overlook the Tennessee River and downtown."

The Planning Commission meets next Monday at 1 p.m. at the County Courthouse.

The Regional Planning Agency staff is recommending approval with the conditions that there be no more than six residential lots and no more than one single-family detached residences per lot.
