Series of debates highlight Hamilton County School Board candidates

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Hamilton County School Board District 6 candidates Michael Henry and Jenny Hill took questions in a debate Tuesday night.

“We’re hosting the second of a series of school board candidate debates for the five districts in Hamilton county that have seats up for election in this season,” Interim Executive Director of UnifiEd Natalie Cook said.

At least 50 people dropped in to Lookout Valley Middle High School where the two candidates answered several difficult questions.

Some of the questions came from the audience.

The topics ranged from early childhood education to being transparent and accountable as well as what will be their priorities as a school board member.

“We have done some strategic planning as a district, but we need to do a more intentional plan,” Hill said.

“I want to make sure that we continue to be in touch, continue to see what’s happening in these schools and make sure that it’s addressed with all people,” Henry said.

Chattanooga 2.0 and UnifiEd have been hosting these debates and have a some more up coming.

The District 9 debate will be on May 14th, District 3 debate is scheduled for May 21st, and District 5 debate is to be determined.

“These debates are really important. We’re holding them early in the election season so that it’s a first chance for the public get to hear from their would be representatives on the school board, find out what issues are most important to them, find out what they value in our public schools here locally,” Cook said.

Only one current school board member will not be taking another run for their position in August.

District 6 School Board Member Joe Galloway is not running for re-election.

That will bring in a new person fill the shoes.

Henry and Hill are the only ones that have announced that they are running for the seat.

The election is August 2nd.
