Demarcus Cantrell Bennett
A teen who said he stole some $59,000 in phones and watches from the Chattanooga Amazon Fulfillment Center has been given diversion.
Demarcus Cantrell Bennett, 19, of 4709 Colonial Dr., appeared before Criminal Court Judge Don Poole.
Police responded to Amazon after being told that Bennett came to work on his day off and was trying to leave the building with $4,370 worth of phones and watches.
Officials said Bennett hid the items on his person and walked past the security area. He had a medical badge that allowed him to avoid the security checkpoint at the door.
Bennett then wrote out a statement saying he had taken the $59,000 in items.
He then led police to his car where he had another $3,000 worth of phones.
Prosecutor Tom Landis said Amazon later concluded that the amount of their loss was $10,000 - minus phones and watches that were returned to them.
Bennett is required to pay $10,000 in restitution.
Under diversion, a conviction can be taken off the books if the defendant does not get in more trouble within a specified time.
