Work is set to get underway on the extension of MLK Boulevard across Riverfront Parkway to the Riverwalk at Blue Goose Hollow.
A groundbreaking ceremony by city and county officials is set for Thursday at 2 p.m.
Officials said the $3.5-million project by Highland Building Group and Evergreen Real Estate "will complete the connections between Chattanooga’s downtown core and the Tennessee River, enhancing public space along the Tennessee RiverWalk and stimulating private investment."
Mayor Andy Berke said, “Completing the extension of West M.L.
King Boulevard is an integral part of connecting our city to one of our most valuable and scenic public spaces, We’re also very excited that the project’s developer and contractor have made an above-and-beyond commitment to creating new opportunities for veteran, minority, and women-owned businesses.”
Evergreen Real Estate's Aaron White said, “We’re excited to be part of such an essential project in Chattanooga. Completing this road extension will help connect more community members and visitors to this area of town.”
New residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties will be developed in proximity to the M.L. King Boulevard extension. Fulton Road from Riverfront Parkway to Canal Street will also be completed as part of this project.
County Mayor Jim Coppinger said, “Connectivity is key to our growth. This will make our spectacular Tennessee Riverpark more accessible and available to more members of our community, which drives economic growth, improves public health, and helps us all.”
The ceremony will be near the Blue Goose Hollow Trailhead at 876 W 9th Ave.
