Beer And Ax Throwing To Be Mixed At New E. Main Venue

Chairman of the Chattanooga Beer Board Ron Smith called it the most unusual request for a beer license he has seen. It came from Randall Connelly, owner of Valkyrie Axe Throwing, 45 E. Main St. The bar where beer will be served is designed as a Viking ship and only pre-packaged food will be available. There will be a separate area where customers can pay for lessons and an “axpert” will teach them how to throw an axe.

People under the age of 21 can be there, so in order to separate the customers who are the legal age to buy beer, wristbands will be given.

Mr. Connelly said the axperts will monitor the crowds to ensure that people have not had too much to drink. Hours of operations are Monday-Thursday 5-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m.-12 a.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

The application was approved.

Kanku’s #31, 301 E.M.L. King Blvd. was given a special events beer permit for the Big 9ine Roots Festival that will take place on Oct. 5 from 4-11 p.m. This street party will be in the same area that the Bessie Smith Strut was held. It is a free event with food vendors and music set up on stages along M.L.K. Boulevard. There will be four gates into the fenced-off space that runs from Georgia Avenue to Magnolia. Kanku’s will join the other businesses along the street in selling beer. Owner Ashish Chaudhari said no glass bottles will leave the store and that when the festival starts at 4 p.m. all the beer coolers will be locked except the ones holding individual 16-ounce cans.

ChattaJack 2019, a benefit for the Tennessee River Gorge Trust, is scheduled for Oct. 26 from 6-10 p.m. at Ross’s Landing. The event is a 31-mile route for paddlers through the Tennessee River Gorge. Going with the current, the fastest time is expected to be around four hours and the cut-off time will be eight and a half hours.

From Oct. 10-13, The Tennessee Tow Truck Association will hold an event for members and applicants near the Chattanooga Convention Center. On Friday, Oct. 11 from 6-9 p.m. the party will move outside.  13th Street and Fort Streets will be closed and taped off and a beer tent will be at the corner. Chattanooga Brewing Co. will be serving beer and providing the bartenders and roaming security guards will monitor the crowd to make sure they stay inside the designated boundaries.

The Creative Discovery Museum is holding two fundraisers aimed at parents, grandparents and potential parents. These events will allow them to play with the displays without having children around. The party on Oct. 24 from 7-10 p.m. will have the theme “Weird Science,” and on Dec. 19, also from 7-10 p.m., the theme will be “Santa’s Workshop,” where gifts can be created. Big River will supply the beer and bartenders.

La Paz, the organization with the goal to make Chattanooga’s Latino population thrive, is holding its first Taquiza, or Taco Fest on Oct. 19. It will be held at Miller Park from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be a beer tent where IDs are checked and security guards will be roaming throughout the park to guard against overserving and to keep people inside the area where beer will be allowed.

Village VW will hold it’s fourth Octoberfest at 6001 International Dr. with the Pickle Barrel serving beer. Live music will be provided by a couple of bands and there will be food trucks. This is a “customer appreciation day” for the business.

The Carmike movie theater at 311 Broad St. has new owners, American Multi-Cinema, Inc., and it will now be known as AMC Majestic 12. Nothing in the theater will change including the employees and manager, only the corporate ownership will change, said Chattanooga Police Officer John Collins. Because there are new owners a beer license was required and issued by the board.
