Berke Recuses Self On Coyote Jacks Enforcement Where 3 Have Died; Cites Uncle's Ownership; Then Ronnie Berke Drops Ownership Interest

  • Monday, October 7, 2019

Mayor Andy Berke is recusing himself from any enforcement action at the Coyote Jacks nightclub on the Southside where three have died in an around the club, citing his uncle's ownership.

Later in the day, the uncle, attorney Ronnie Berke, said he had just given up his interest in Coyote Jacks to his girlfriend, Tammie Taylor.

Prior to that move, the mayor's office issued this statement:

"I am concerned any time a life is lost to senseless gun violence and my heart breaks for the victim's family. The establishment where this incident occurred involves a family member of mine, and as I've stated previously, I have explicitly requested to Chief Roddy that I remain recused from any decision making whatsoever to prevent the appearance of favoritism or preferential treatment. As I would with any venue, I have encouraged Chief Roddy to take any action necessary to ensure public safety. The safety of our community and the integrity of CPD's work are my top priorities."

Chattanooga Police said they have responded to 470 calls from the club at 1400 Cowart St. since 2015.

A 19-year-old, Brandon Rogers, was shot and killed near the front door of the club over the weekend.

Police were there to close the club for the night after it was found that too many people had been allowed to attend a special event.

Police Chief David Roddy said he planned to ask the city attorney's office and the district attorney for possible enforcement actions against Coyote Jacks.

The Coyote Jacks website said it "seamlessly operates as a very unique, three-level, 15,000-square-foot adult playground that is perfectly designed to entertain and entice all your senses." 15,000
