City Officer Involved In Wreck While Responding To Call About Officer Involved In A Fight

  • Thursday, November 7, 2019

A Chattanooga Police officer was involved in a wreck on South Kelley Street on Thursday morning while responding to a call of an officer involved in a fight.

Police said, "Officers were responding emergency status to an officer that was involved in a fight. The officer was traveling north on South Kelley driving a Ford Crown Vic.

"The officer came upon two vehicles - a black Ford Focus and a red Chevy Impala.

"As he approached the vehicles, the Impala pulled to the right side of the road to allow the officer to pass. As the officer began to overtake the vehicles, the driver of the Focus attempted to yield to the left instead of the right, turning into the Impala.

"The officer attempted to swerve to avoid impact but was unable to. The patrol vehicle made contact with the left front fender of the Focus. This caused the Focus to spin into the Impala.

"After hitting the Focus, the patrol car separated and went into the gravel parking lot at 2013 South Kelley St.

"After speaking with the driver of the Focus, it was found that he was attempting to yield to the emergency lights to the left side of the roadway instead of the right side. It was further found that the officer was following policy, as well as state law, and attempting to overtake the vehicles on the left.

"The driver of the Focus was cited for failure to yield to the right for emergency vehicles.

"The officer had a burn on his left arm from the airbag being deployed from impact. He declined medical attention.

"No other injuries were reported on scene."
