  • Wednesday, February 6, 2019

Matthew Ware, Megan Gaither and Jim Cook are winners of tickets for two to the Tivoli Theater's showing of Casablanca on Saturday.

They were winners in a contest sponsored by Chattanoogan.com and the Tivoli.

Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman  will be lighting up the new 50-foot drop screen at the Tivoli.   Showings will be at 3 and 7 p.m. as part of the Bobby Stone Film Series.

Named in honor of Chattanooga native and Tivoli Theatre Foundation Director Emeritus Bobby Stone, this unique series is designed "to bring film back to the Tivoli with the spirit of Bobby’s expert eye and passion for film, featuring both first run and classic titles. Films will include arthouse and other distinctive programming reflective of Bobby’s love of cinema and his own skill in cinematography and capture of light.

"These showings would not be possible without recent generous contributions towards the installation of new equipment and a renovated projection room."

"This film series launch follows the successful installation of a new state of the art digital sound and projection system valued at $350,000.  The new system includes a brand new 4k digital projector, immersive surround sound, and the 50-foot drop down screen, the largest of its kind in North America.

"Made possible by a major gift from Bobby Stone’s family and friends, this new equipment brings film projection back to the ‘Jewel of the South,’ in a world-class way."

Friends of the Tivoli can receive advance notice of screenings and complimentary or discounted tickets. All tickets are General Admission. $12 Adults | $10 for Children (12 and under) | $10 for Seniors.

Casablanca: easy to enter, but much harder to leave, especially if your name is on the Nazis' most-wanted list! Atop that list is Czech Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), whose only hope is Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical American who sticks his neck out for no one ... especially Victor's wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), the ex-lover who broke his heart. So when Ilsa offers herself in exchange for Laszlo's safe transport out of the country, the bitter Rick must decide what's more important -- his own happiness or the countless lives that hang in the balance. Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Other upcoming shows in the Bobby Stone Series are:

"A Star Is Born" Saturday, March 2 at 3 and 7 p.m.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic souls coming together, on stage and in life. A complex journey through the beauty and the heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive. In this new take on the iconic love story, four-time Oscar nominee Cooper ("American Sniper," "American Hustle," "Silver Linings Playbook"), makes his directorial debut, and also stars alongside multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Gaga in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper portrays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with struggling artist Ally. She has given up on her dream to become a successful singer, until she meets Jack, who immediately sees her natural talent.

The Favourite Sunday March 3

Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and a mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen's companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

If Beale Street Could Talk Sunday March 24 at 2 and 6 p.m.

Set in early-1970s Harlem, If Beale Street Could Talk is a timeless and moving love story of both a couple's unbreakable bond and the African-American family's empowering embrace, as told through the eyes of 19-year-old Tish Rivers (screen newcomer KiKi Layne). A daughter and wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny (Stephan James). Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Through the unique intimacy and power of cinema, If Beale Street Could Talk honors the author's prescient words and imagery, charting the emotional currents navigated in an unforgiving and racially biased world as the filmmaker poetically crosses time frames to show how love and humanity endure.
