Ladarean Lane
Ladarean Lane, who was charged earlier with the murder of 18-year-old Areeyon Lane at the Speedway on E. Third Street, is now facing five charges of attempted pre-meditated first-degree murder.
All the charges are from Sept. 28, 2018, when there was an early morning shootout at the gas station.
Five additional victims are listed in Grand Jury indictments as well as Areeyon Lane, who died after being taken to a hospital.
According to earlier testimony, Lane was with two other individuals in a white Ford Taurus. All three individuals exited and one of them became embroiled in an argument with Areeyon Lane. Shots then broke out.
In addition to Lane being killed, a second person showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound.
And there was a juvenile who was with Ladarean Lane who also was charged in the Areeyon Lane murder.
Detective Zach Crawford said earlier that Ladarean Lane told him that he stepped in to protect the person he was with. He said that person was arguing with Areeyon Lane over a gun. He said Lane did not admit firing shots, but said he "blanked out" in the middle of the argument.
Police found numerous shell casings at the scene - from a 9 mm handgun as well as a 35 caliber gun.
Detective Crawford said the incident was caught on video. He said a video still shot is grainy, but it shows Ladarean Lane holding a gun with the muzzle fire visible.
Another view shows the juvenile who had been arguing with Areeyon Lane standing over him as Lane was on his back with his legs up in the air, it was testified.
He said there were two customers at the scene who told of witnessing the incident and hearing 8-10 gunshots. An off-duty police officer nearby estimated 8-12 shots.
Ladarean Lane, who is now 19, was initially charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
The new charges against him also include five counts of employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.
Defense attorney Mary Sullivan Moore at the earlier hearing asked detective Crawford if Areeyon Lane had not just killed another teen five hours earlier. She mentioned the name of 18-year-old Te'unte Rice, who died after being shot in the 2000 block of Windsor Street. Detective Crawford said he was not the investigator on that case.
