Mocs Turn Their Attention to Unique Spring Season

The Chattanooga Mocs played their one and only fall football game last Saturday, losing a 13 to 10 heart-breaker to Western Kentucky. Now UTC gears up for a new chapter in the history of Mocs football – A spring season. The Southern Conference canceled fall sports, and pushed them back to the spring due to the pandemic.

The idea of a spring football season. Yeah kind of shocking when the Mocs first heard about it.
Said linebacker Jay Person:”When it first happened, they said there ain’t no way we’ll do it. Coach (Rusty) Wright even said he didn’t know if we would do it. But now we are getting an opportunity to do it. We’re just looking at it on the good side. Just getting more reps. More practice.”
Now it seems the Mocs are getting in the groove with the idea.
Said defensive back Rashun Freeman:”I just have the mind set to be ready for anything, especially in these times. I just always try to stay prepared.”
Reporter:”Are you looking forward to it in a way?”
Said Person:”In a way. (chuckles) I’m looking forward to it. We get. It’s more football. That’s always good. It’s a quick turn around to the fall season, so that’s the only thing that will be kind of complicated for us.”
Said linebacker Ty Boeck:”It’s different. Definitely going to have to adapt to it. I think Coach Wright said we are going to have 19 games in 42 weeks. That’s if we suck and not go to the playoffs.”
The Mocs spring season kicks with a home game on February 20th against VMI.
Chattanooga will be back at Finley Stadium the following weekend against Wofford.
Reporter:”Ever played in February before?”
Said Boeck:”Uh no. No I haven’t played football in February. It’s going to be different. I know this team will adapt.”
Reporter:”Ever played football in February before?”
Said Person:”No not when it counts. Scrimmage wise we have (chuckles)”
Reporter:”I mean it could be like Lambeau Field at Finley Stadium.”
Said Person:”Yeah. I know. It should be nice. (chuckles)
Reporter:”Will that be weird starting practice in January?”
Said Freeman:”It definitely will be weird. It has never happened before. This has never happened before this fall. Just playing one game.”
Following the 8 game SoCon season, the FCS playoffs will start on April 24th.
Said Freeman:”It’s always going to be fun to play games. 2021 hopefully everything is back right and we can just play and compete for a SoCon Championship.”
