At least two other candidates are joining Todd Gardenhire in the field for Senate District 10.

Senator Gardenhire, a Republican, is launching another campaign.

John Allen Brooks, a former member of the County Commission and ex-chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, has picked up papers for the race.

Chattanooga native and assistant chief for the Chattanooga Police Department Glenn Scruggs announced that he will run for Senate District 10 in the Democratic primary.

“For 25 years, I’ve served my community as a police officer,” Asst. Chief Scruggs said. “Now I’m hoping to continue that service in the state legislature, bringing the voices of the people of District 10 to the Capitol.

“When I speak to my friends and neighbors, I hear that they are concerned about safety, access to good jobs, and the quality of our schools. My campaign will be about addressing the real issues that are currently being ignored in Nashville in favor of politics as usual.”

Born and raised in Avondale, Asst. Chief Scruggs is a 25-year veteran of the police department. He said, "I often find myself protecting the very streets I grew up on and the families I grew up with."

He lives with his wife of 20 years and son in East Brainerd.

A graduate of Brainerd High School and Belhaven University, he attends Olivet Baptist Church.

He said he will begin his campaign in the heart of the neighborhood in which he was raised with a kickoff event next Monday at 6 p.m. at 2426 Glass St.

State House candidates have picked up papers to seek re-election.

They include:

Robin Smith District 26

Patsy Hazlewood District 27

Yusuf Hakeem District 28

Mike Carter District 29

Esther Helton District 30
