Market Street Bridge inspection

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Traffic routes were a little different in downtown Chattanooga on Tuesday as the Market Street bridge was closed for the day.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation conducted a regularly scheduled full inspection of the bridge.

It happens every 2 years.

The official name of the bridge is the John Ross Bridge. But for the locals, it’s usually just referred to as the Market Street bridge.

The bridge was built way back in 1917. It was closed in 2005 for a total renovation, but reopened in August of 2007.

“We’re also looking at some underpass features. Taking a look at different traffic safety features. Making sure it’s all in compliance. We look at the bridge deck itself. Then they’re looking at the super-structure, which in this case would be the truss system…..”

The Market Street bridge is scheduled for a full UNDERWATER inspection in the fall of this year.
