Golden Apple: Zack Vice

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Zack Vice was a carpenter looking for a change.

He found that change at Howard High School.

The carpentry teacher uses his passion to teach students life skills, and how to work with their hands.

School leaders say Vice spends every day making sure his students have real life opportunities.

He went from a lucrative career building homes, and having his own business, to answering the call to teach.

Vice likes helping the kids.

“Not all kids are gonna go to college and I didn’t go to college. When this opportunity came along I thought well, you know, help, it’s hard to find. So why don’t I start helping these kids prepare them. And you know in return it’s just going to create help for other contractors. And you know just really to provide an opportunity for kids that don’t want to go to school. You know I didn’t really pursue this job. It just kind of come to me. And sometimes I think God puts things in our lives for a reason and I think that’s why I’m here.”

Vice says he’ll stay at Howard for as long as they will let him.
