School classrooms condemned after explosive water main break

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A water main break in the Mountain Creek area did some major damage to a local school.

It happened early Tuesday Morning at 1200 Mountain Creek Road in the building that was once the Four Squares Mall.

The water main was under the parking lot.

But heavily pressurized water shot over the building and into the Skyuka Hall, which serves students with learning differences. (Here is one of our 3 stories on the school for our What’s Right With Our Schools series.)

The water severely damaged several classrooms.

Chattanooga building inspectors later examined the damage and condemned the building.

Other offices in the area were not damaged.

Tennessee American Water and the Chattanooga Fire Department got reports on the incident, but since it was a private water line, they were not responsible.

However, Tennessee American Water did shut off a main while repairs were being done on the private one.
