Groundbreaking for East Hamilton Middle School

Wednesday was groundbreaking day for the new East Hamilton Middle School.

East Hamilton Middle is a major project with the $125 million building plan, which was approved by the Hamilton County School Board in October of 2017.

The goal is to reduce overcrowding in the existing school building.? 1200 students in grades 6 through 8 will move into the building.

Hamilton County School Superintendent Doctor Bryan Johnson says safety was their top priority when sketching out plans.

"We feel strongly that we have to harden our exteriors. Things like controlled access doors which we've invested in, School Resource Officer placement, which we've invested in, you know, we've invested in cameras and technology which we've invested in."

The building is by Apison Elementary and will be 165,000 square feet and will take up 33 acres.

The school is expected to open for the 2020-2021 school year.
